Heteroscedasticity

Definition
Let be random variables with finite variances. They are homoscedastic if , and heteroscedastic otherwise.
Now let be a regression model with random regressors . Its errors are homoscedastic if the conditional variance is a constant , not depending on . They are heteroscedastic otherwise.
Remarks
Example: let and for with and . Then , so the errors are heteroscedastic.
Non-example: if with independent of and , then for all , so the errors are homoscedastic, although they depend on .
In linear regression with heteroscedastic, uncorrelated errors, the covariance of the least squares estimator is with . The heteroscedasticity-consistent estimator of White replaces by , where are the residuals. The spelling heteroskedastic is also used.
