Definition
Let and let be complex numbers with Heun's equation is the linear differential equation Assume . The local Heun function is the unique solution of Heun's equation that is analytic at and takes the value there.
Remarks
Heun's equation is a Fuchsian equation with regular singular points . Every Fuchsian equation with four regular singular points takes this form after moving the singular points there and making one exponent at each finite point. The exponents are at , at , at and at . The relation is Fuchs' relation: the sum of all exponents equals . The number is the accessory parameter; it is not determined by the exponents. The power series of at converges in the disc . Example: for and , the constant is a solution, since and ; so . Non-example: for and , the constant is not a solution, since the equation leaves the term . A Heun function in the narrow sense is a local solution that is analytic at two singular points at once, for instance at and . This happens only for special values of .
