Hilbert–Schmidt operator
Builds on Hilbert spaceOrthonormal basisContinuous linear map
Definition
Let and be Hilbert spaces and let be a bounded linear operator. The operator is a Hilbert–Schmidt operator if there is an orthonormal basis of such that The Hilbert–Schmidt norm of is .
Remarks
The condition and the value of the sum do not depend on the orthonormal basis. Indeed, for an orthonormal basis of , Parseval's identity gives , and the right side does not involve .
Every Hilbert–Schmidt operator is compact and satisfies . A compact operator is Hilbert–Schmidt if and only if its singular values satisfy , and then . The Hilbert–Schmidt operators form the Schatten class ; every trace class operator is Hilbert–Schmidt. On spaces of -finite measure spaces, they are the integral operators with square-integrable kernels, and is the norm of the kernel.
Example: on , the operator is Hilbert–Schmidt. For the standard basis, and .
Non-example: on , the operator is compact but not Hilbert–Schmidt, since diverges. The identity of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space is not Hilbert–Schmidt either.
