Hilbert transform of sinusoids

Builds on Hilbert transformCauchy principal value

Example

Let ω>0\omega > 0, and define the Hilbert transform of a bounded continuous function ff by the principal value at 00 and at ∞\infty Hf(x)=1πlim⁡ε→0+, R→∞∫ε<∣u∣<Rf(x−u)u du.Hf(x) = \frac{1}{\pi} \lim_{\varepsilon \to 0^+,\, R \to \infty} \int_{\varepsilon < \abs{u} < R} \frac{f(x - u)}{u}\, du. Then H[cos⁡(ω⋅)](x)=sin⁡(ωx),H[sin⁡(ω⋅)](x)=−cos⁡(ωx).H[\cos(\omega \cdot)](x) = \sin(\omega x), \qquad H[\sin(\omega \cdot)](x) = -\cos(\omega x). Check for the cosine: cos⁡(ω(x−u))=cos⁡(ωx)cos⁡(ωu)+sin⁡(ωx)sin⁡(ωu)\cos(\omega(x - u)) = \cos(\omega x) \cos(\omega u) + \sin(\omega x) \sin(\omega u). On the symmetric set ε<∣u∣<R\varepsilon < \abs{u} < R, the odd function cos⁡(ωu)/u\cos(\omega u)/u integrates to 00. The even function sin⁡(ωu)/u\sin(\omega u)/u integrates to 2∫εRsin⁡(ωu)u du2 \int_{\varepsilon}^{R} \frac{\sin(\omega u)}{u}\, du, which tends to 2⋅π2=π2 \cdot \frac{\pi}{2} = \pi. So H[cos⁡(ω⋅)](x)=1π⋅πsin⁡(ωx)=sin⁡(ωx)H[\cos(\omega \cdot)](x) = \frac{1}{\pi} \cdot \pi \sin(\omega x) = \sin(\omega x). The same computation with sin⁡(ω(x−u))=sin⁡(ωx)cos⁡(ωu)−cos⁡(ωx)sin⁡(ωu)\sin(\omega(x - u)) = \sin(\omega x)\cos(\omega u) - \cos(\omega x)\sin(\omega u) gives −cos⁡(ωx)-\cos(\omega x). For ω<0\omega < 0 the signs change, since ∫0∞sin⁡(ωu)u du=−π2\int_0^\infty \frac{\sin(\omega u)}{u}\, du = -\frac{\pi}{2}.

Remarks

The result agrees with the Fourier multiplier −isgn⁡(ω)-i \sgn(\omega) of the Hilbert transform: H[eiωx]=−isgn⁡(ω) eiωxH[e^{i\omega x}] = -i \sgn(\omega)\, e^{i\omega x}. Applying HH twice gives H2cos⁡=−cos⁡H^2 \cos = -\cos, an instance of H2=−id⁡H^2 = -\id. The function cos⁡(ωx)+isin⁡(ωx)=eiωx\cos(\omega x) + i \sin(\omega x) = e^{i\omega x} is the analytic signal of cos⁡(ωx)\cos(\omega x).
