Definition
Let be a complex Banach algebra with unit , and let with spectrum . Let be an open set with , and let be holomorphic. Let be a finite union of closed piecewise smooth curves in . Assume that the winding number of is around each point of and around each point of . The element is the contour integral The map , from the algebra of holomorphic functions on to , is the holomorphic functional calculus of .
Remarks
The integrand is continuous, since , the resolvent, is defined and holomorphic off . By Cauchy's theorem for -valued holomorphic functions, does not depend on the choice of . Example: for and a large circle with , expand ; only the term survives the integral, so . Non-example: is not holomorphic, so the definition does not apply; for non-normal operators there is no reasonable way to define by this method. The calculus is an algebra homomorphism, it is continuous for locally uniform convergence of , and . For a normal operator on a Hilbert space it agrees with the continuous functional calculus on holomorphic functions. When is near one closed and open part of and near the rest, is the Riesz projector of that part.
