Definition
Let be a locally small category, so that for all objects the morphisms form a set . Let be the category of sets and functions, and let be an object of .
- The covariant hom functor sends an object to and a morphism to the function , .
- The contravariant hom functor sends an object to and a morphism to the function , .
Remarks
Associativity of composition gives , and is the identity, so clause 1 defines a functor. Clause 2 defines a contravariant functor, that is, a functor on the opposite category . The two together form the bifunctor on the product category. Other notations are , and .
Example: in the category of real vector spaces, take . A linear map is determined by the image of , so is in bijection with , and corresponds to itself.
Non-example: the assignment with is not a covariant hom functor. For and , the composite is in general not defined. So it does not give a function .
