Homogeneous and inhomogeneous linear recurrences
Builds on Recurrence relationSequence
Definition
Let be a field and let be an integer. Let and be sequences. A linear recurrence of order is the recurrence relation for a sequence . The sequence is its right-hand side.
- The recurrence is homogeneous if for all .
- The recurrence is inhomogeneous if for some .
- The associated homogeneous recurrence is the one with the same and with replaced by .
Remarks
Example: is inhomogeneous of order , with and . Its associated homogeneous recurrence is , whose solutions are . Non-example: is not a linear recurrence at all, since the term is not linear in ; so it is neither homogeneous nor inhomogeneous in this sense. When all are constant, the homogeneous case is a linear recurrence with constant coefficients. Other names are homogeneous and nonhomogeneous linear difference equations. The difference of two solutions of the inhomogeneous recurrence solves the associated homogeneous one.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
