Homogeneous integral equation
Builds on Linear integral equationIntegral equation of the second kindKernel of an integral equationHomogeneous system of linear equations
Definition
Let , let and a kernel be given, and let . For each , let be either or . A linear integral equation is homogeneous if for all , and inhomogeneous otherwise. For an equation of the second kind, the homogeneous equation is
Remarks
Example: on is homogeneous. Every solution has the form with , so there is a nonzero solution exactly when .
Non-example: is inhomogeneous, since its free term is not zero.
The solutions of a homogeneous equation form a vector space, like the solutions of a homogeneous system of linear equations. The difference of two solutions of an inhomogeneous equation solves the homogeneous one.
