Definition
Let be an algebraically closed field, and let be an algebraic group over . A homogeneous space for is a nonempty variety over with an action of such that acts transitively on .
Remarks
Let and let be its stabilizer, a closed subgroup of . The orbit map induces a bijective morphism . In characteristic this morphism is an isomorphism, so . In characteristic it can fail to be an isomorphism, because the orbit map need not be separable.
Example: acts on by . Any nonzero vector can be sent to any other by an invertible matrix, so the action is transitive and is a homogeneous space.
Non-example: acts on by . There are two orbits, and , so the action is not transitive.
In other settings, such as Lie groups and topological groups, a homogeneous space is a manifold or a space with a transitive action of the group.
