Definition

Let Ω⊂ℝd\Omega \subset \R^d be a bounded polygonal domain, and let VV be a Sobolev space on Ω\Omega such as H01(Ω)H^1_0(\Omega). An hp finite element space is given by two data:

  1. a mesh 𝒯\mathcal{T} of Ω\Omega into elements KK;
  2. a degree vector p=(pK)K∈𝒯p = (p_K)_{K \in \mathcal{T}} of positive integers.

The space V𝒯,pV_{\mathcal{T}, p} is the set of v∈Vv \in V whose restriction to each KK is a polynomial of degree at most pKp_K. The hp-FEM is the Galerkin method on a sequence of such spaces. In this sequence, both the mesh and the degree vector may change from one step to the next.

Remarks

The hh-version is the case of constant pp and finer meshes, and the pp-version is the case of a fixed mesh and growing degrees. Both are special cases of the finite element method in this setting.

Example: on Ω=(0,1)\Omega = (0, 1) with a solution behaving like xλx^\lambda near 00, with 0<λ<10 < \lambda < 1, take a geometric mesh with nodes 0,σn−1,…,σ,10, \sigma^{n-1}, \ldots, \sigma, 1 for some 0<σ<10 < \sigma < 1. Take degrees that grow linearly away from 00. For such geometric meshes, the energy error decays exponentially in a root of the number of unknowns NN. In two dimensions the rate is exp⁡(−bN1/3)\exp(-b N^{1/3}) for piecewise analytic data on polygons.

Non-example: let V=H01(Ω)V = H^1_0(\Omega) and take all functions that are polynomials of degree at most pKp_K on each KK, with no continuity across elements. A function with a jump across an interior face is not in H1(Ω)H^1(\Omega), so this set fails the condition v∈Vv \in V. Such spaces are used by hp discontinuous Galerkin methods instead.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
