Definition

Let δ>0\delta > 0. The Huber loss with threshold δ\delta is the function Lδ ⁣:ℝ→ℝL_\delta \colon \R \to \R given by Lδ(a)={a22if ∣a∣≤δ,δ(∣a∣−δ2)if ∣a∣>δ.L_\delta(a) = \begin{cases} \dfrac{a^2}{2} & \text{if } \abs{a} \le \delta, \\[1ex] \delta\Big(\abs{a} - \dfrac{\delta}{2}\Big) & \text{if } \abs{a} > \delta. \end{cases}

Remarks

The two pieces agree at ∣a∣=δ\abs{a} = \delta, where both equal δ2/2\delta^2/2, and so do their derivatives. So LδL_\delta is convex and continuously differentiable, with derivative ψδ(a)=max⁡(−δ,min⁡(δ,a))\psi_\delta(a) = \max(-\delta, \min(\delta, a)), the residual clipped to [−δ,δ][-\delta, \delta]. Huber's M-estimator of location minimises ∑i=1nLδ(xi−μ)\sum_{i=1}^{n} L_\delta(x_i - \mu) over μ∈ℝ\mu \in \R, or equivalently solves ∑iψδ(xi−μ)=0\sum_i \psi_\delta(x_i - \mu) = 0. As δ→∞\delta \to \infty it tends to the mean, and as δ→0\delta \to 0 it tends to the median.

Example: with δ=1\delta = 1, L1(0.5)=0.125L_1(0.5) = 0.125, as for squared loss, and L1(3)=3−0.5=2.5L_1(3) = 3 - 0.5 = 2.5, much less than 32/2=4.53^2/2 = 4.5.

Non-example: the function a↦∣a∣a \mapsto \abs{a} grows linearly but is not differentiable at 00. It is not quadratic on any interval around 00, so it is not a Huber loss for any δ\delta.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
