Definition
Let . The hypergeometric differential equation is the second-order linear ordinary differential equation for a function of a complex variable :
Remarks
Its singular points on the Riemann sphere are , and , and all three are regular singular points. The exponents are at , at and at .
Example: if , the hypergeometric function is a solution. To check it, put ; the equation gives , which is exactly the recursion of the coefficients . If moreover , a second, independent solution near is .
Non-example: Kummer's equation is not of this form; it has a regular singular point at , but its singular point at is irregular.
In the notation of the Riemann P-symbol, the solutions form
