Hypoelliptic operator

Definition
Let be an open set and let be a linear differential operator on whose coefficients are smooth functions. A distribution on an open set is a continuous linear functional on the space of test functions on . The operator is hypoelliptic if the following holds for every open set and every distribution on . If is a smooth function on , then is a smooth function on .
Remarks
Equivalently, for every distribution , where the singular support is the complement of the largest open set on which the distribution is smooth. Example: every elliptic operator with smooth coefficients is hypoelliptic; this is elliptic regularity. The heat operator on is hypoelliptic but not elliptic. Non-example: the wave operator on is not hypoelliptic. For the Heaviside function , the distribution satisfies , which is smooth, but is not smooth.
