Definition

Let (X,๐’ชX)(X, \mathcal{O}_X) be a ringed space. An ideal sheaf on XX is a sub-๐’ชX\mathcal{O}_X-module โ„โІ๐’ชX\mathcal{I} \subseteq \mathcal{O}_X in the sense of sheaves of modules. Equivalently, โ„\mathcal{I} is a subsheaf of ๐’ชX\mathcal{O}_X such that โ„(U)\mathcal{I}(U) is an ideal of ๐’ชX(U)\mathcal{O}_X(U) for every open set UโІXU \subseteq X.

Remarks

On X=SpecโกAX = \operatorname{Spec} A, an ideal IโІAI \subseteq A gives the ideal sheaf I~\widetilde{I}, with I~(D(f))=IfโІAf\widetilde{I}(D(f)) = I_f \subseteq A_f. It is a sub-๐’ชX\mathcal{O}_X-module of A~=๐’ชX\widetilde{A} = \mathcal{O}_X, since localization preserves ideals. On X=๐”ธk1=Specโกk[t]X = \mathbb{A}^1_k = \operatorname{Spec} k[t], the subsheaf of ๐’ชX\mathcal{O}_X of constant functions is not an ideal sheaf. Its sections over XX form kโІk[t]k \subseteq k[t], which is not an ideal, since tโ‹…1=tt \cdot 1 = t is not constant. For a closed subscheme ZโІXZ \subseteq X of a scheme, the kernel of ๐’ชXโ†’๐’ชZ\mathcal{O}_X \to \mathcal{O}_Z is a quasi-coherent ideal sheaf โ„Z\mathcal{I}_Z. This gives a bijection between closed subschemes of XX and quasi-coherent ideal sheaves on XX.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
