Infinitary operation
Builds on ArityFunctionCartesian product
Definition
Let be a set and let be an infinite set. Write for the Cartesian product of copies of indexed by , the set of families of elements of . An infinitary operation on with index set is a function . Its arity is the cardinal .
Remarks
Example: on , the map , , is an infinitary operation of arity . Each sequence in is bounded above by , so its supremum exists and lies in .
Non-example: the map is not an infinitary operation on , because it is not defined on the whole of : the series diverges.
Some authors index the arguments by an infinite ordinal instead of an arbitrary set , and call the arity.
