Definition
Let and be smooth manifolds and let be a smooth map. A vector field along is a smooth map with for all , where is the tangent bundle. Let be the differential of . The map is infinitesimally stable if every vector field along has the following form. There are a smooth vector field on and a smooth vector field on with
Remarks
The two terms are the derivatives at of and , where and are the flows of and . So the condition says that every first-order deformation of is tangent to the orbit of under changes of coordinates. Example: a submersion is infinitesimally stable. Indeed, each is surjective, so a choice of complement of depending smoothly on gives a vector field with , and one takes . Non-example: a constant map with value is not infinitesimally stable. Here and is the constant , so a nonconstant function on , viewed as a vector field along , is not of the required form.
