Definition

Let II be an open interval, let f ⁣:I→ℝf \colon I \to \mathbb{R} be continuous, and let c∈Ic \in I. The point cc is an inflection point of ff if there is δ>0\delta > 0 with one of the following properties. The function ff is convex on (c−δ,c](c - \delta, c] and concave on [c,c+δ)[c, c + \delta). Or ff is concave on (c−δ,c](c - \delta, c] and convex on [c,c+δ)[c, c + \delta).

Remarks

If ff is twice differentiable at an inflection point cc, then f′′(c)=0f''(c) = 0. The converse fails: f(x)=x4f(x) = x^4 has f′′(0)=0f''(0) = 0, but 00 is not an inflection point. The function x3x^3 has an inflection point at 00. So does sin⁡x\sin x, at each multiple of π\pi. Some texts also ask the graph to have a tangent line at cc.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
