Injective resolution

Builds on Abelian categoryInjective objectExact sequence

Definition

Let ๐’œ\mathcal{A} be an abelian category and let XX be an object of ๐’œ\mathcal{A}. An injective resolution of XX is a sequence of objects and morphisms 0โ†’Xโ†’ฮทI0โ†’d0I1โ†’d1I2โ†’โ‹ฏ0 \to X \xrightarrow{\eta} I^0 \xrightarrow{d^0} I^1 \xrightarrow{d^1} I^2 \to \cdots such that:

  1. every InI^n is an injective object;
  2. the sequence is exact.

Remarks

Example: over โ„ค\Z, the sequence 0โ†’โ„คโ†’โ„šโ†’โ„š/โ„คโ†’00 \to \Z \to \Q \to \Q/\Z \to 0 is an injective resolution of โ„ค\Z. It is exact, and โ„š\Q and โ„š/โ„ค\Q/\Z are divisible groups, which are injective modules over โ„ค\Z. Non-example: 0โ†’โ„คโ†’โ‹…2โ„คโ†’โ„ค/2โ„คโ†’00 \to \Z \xrightarrow{\cdot 2} \Z \to \Z/2\Z \to 0 is exact, but โ„ค\Z is not an injective โ„ค\Z-module, since it is not divisible, so clause 1 fails. One writes the resolution as the cochain complex Iโˆ™I^\bullet with the map ฮท\eta; then H0(Iโˆ™)โ‰…XH^0(I^\bullet) \cong X and Hn(Iโˆ™)=0H^n(I^\bullet) = 0 for n>0n > 0. If ๐’œ\mathcal{A} has enough injectives, every object has an injective resolution; this holds for modules over any ring, since every module embeds into an injective module.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
