Definition
Let be a symplectic manifold of dimension , and let be a smooth function. Let denote the Poisson bracket of smooth functions on . The Hamiltonian system with Hamiltonian is integrable, or Liouville integrable, if there are smooth functions such that:
- for all ;
- the differentials are linearly independent at each point of an open dense subset of .
Remarks
Clause 1 with says that each is a first integral of the system, since along solutions. Functions that satisfy clause 1 are said to be in involution.
Example: on with coordinates , let and . Then , since the first summand of does not depend on . The differentials and are independent wherever and , an open dense set.
Non-example: the same with satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2, since everywhere.
Every Hamiltonian system with one degree of freedom () is integrable as soon as on an open dense set. The Liouville–Arnold theorem describes the motion of an integrable system near a compact regular level set.
