Integral equation
Builds on FunctionRiemann integral
Definition
Let and let be an unknown function. For each , let be an interval of integration, either the fixed interval or the interval . An integral equation for is an equation of the form where and are given functions. A solution is a function for which the integrals exist and the equation holds for every .
Remarks
Example: on is an integral equation with . Try : the integral is , so and . So is a solution.
Non-example: is a differential equation, not an integral equation, since does not appear under an integral. Its integral form is an integral equation.
The same definition is used with a region of in place of , and with vector-valued unknowns. When the equation is of Fredholm type; when it is of Volterra type.
