Integral equation of the second kind
Builds on Linear integral equationKernel of an integral equation
Definition
Let , let be a kernel, let be given, and let . For each , let be either or . An integral equation of the second kind is a linear integral equation of the form for the unknown function .
Remarks
Example: on , with . Any solution is a constant with , so for the unique solution is . For there is no solution.
Non-example: is not of the second kind, since does not appear outside the integral; it is of the first kind.
In operator notation, , where is the identity and is the integral operator. Some authors write or put into the kernel.
