Integral equation of the third kind
Builds on Linear integral equationKernel of an integral equationContinuous function
Definition
Let , let be a kernel, let be given, and let . Let be a continuous function that has at least one zero in and is not identically zero. An integral equation of the third kind is a linear integral equation of the form for the unknown function .
Remarks
Example: on , with , , and . The coefficient is continuous, vanishes at , and is not identically zero. The function is a solution, since .
Non-example: on is not of the third kind, since has no zero there. Dividing by turns it into an equation of the second kind.
Some authors also allow the upper limit in place of .
