Convex and discrete geometry Definition
Intersection body
Builds on Convex bodyn-sphere
Definition
Let , and let be a convex body with the origin in its interior. Let be the unit sphere of , and for let . Write for the -dimensional volume in the hyperplane . The intersection body of is the set So is star-shaped about the origin, and its radial function is .
Remarks
Example: let be the closed unit ball of and the volume of the unit ball of . Every section is a unit ball of dimension , so and . Non-example: let the origin lie outside . Then some hyperplane misses , and the radial function vanishes in the direction . So the construction no longer gives a body with the origin in its interior, which is why the definition requires the origin to be an interior point of . Busemann's theorem says that is convex when is convex and symmetric about the origin. The definition is often stated more generally for star bodies, with the same formula for the radial function.
