Definition

Let XX be a smooth, irreducible quasi-projective variety of dimension nn over a field, and let CHj(X)CH^j(X) be its Chow group of codimension jj cycles. Let VV and WW be irreducible subvarieties of codimensions pp and qq. They meet properly if every component ZZ of V∩WV \cap W has codimension p+qp + q. In that case set V⋅W=∑Zi(Z;V⋅W) [Z]V \cdot W = \sum_Z i(Z; V \cdot W) \, [Z], where i(Z;V⋅W)i(Z; V \cdot W) is the intersection multiplicity. Extend this bilinearly to cycles whose components meet properly. The intersection product is the map CHp(X)×CHq(X)→CHp+q(X)CH^p(X) \times CH^q(X) \to CH^{p+q}(X), (α,β)↦α⋅β(\alpha, \beta) \mapsto \alpha \cdot \beta, defined as follows. Choose cycles VV in α\alpha and WW in β\beta that meet properly, and let α⋅β\alpha \cdot \beta be the class of V⋅WV \cdot W. With this product, CH∙(X)=⨁j=0nCHj(X)CH^\bullet(X) = \bigoplus_{j=0}^n CH^j(X) is the Chow ring of XX. Intersection theory is the study of this ring and of the maps between such rings.

Remarks

Chow's moving lemma says that such representatives VV and WW always exist, and the class of V⋅WV \cdot W does not depend on their choice. The product makes CH∙(X)CH^\bullet(X) a commutative, associative graded ring with unit [X][X]. For XX projective, the degree of a 00-cycle gives intersection numbers deg⁡(α⋅β)\deg(\alpha \cdot \beta) for p+q=np + q = n. Example: for X=ℙnX = \mathbb{P}^n with hh the class of a hyperplane, CH∙(ℙn)≅ℤ[h]/(hn+1)CH^\bullet(\mathbb{P}^n) \cong \Z[h]/(h^{n+1}), and a subvariety of codimension jj and degree dd has class dhjd h^j. Non-example: in ℙ2\mathbb{P}^2, a line LL does not meet itself properly, so L⋅LL \cdot L is not given by the formula with V=W=LV = W = L. One moves one copy to another line L′L', and [L]⋅[L]=[L∩L′][L] \cdot [L] = [L \cap L'] is the class of a point. Fulton and MacPherson gave a construction of the product, by deformation to the normal cone, that works without the moving lemma and in greater generality.
