Inversion in a circle
Definition
Let be a point of the Euclidean plane and let . The inversion in the circle with center and radius sends each point to the unique point such that:
- lies on the ray from through ;
- .
Remarks
In coordinates with at the origin, the inversion is . In complex notation with center , it is . Adding a point and setting and extends it to a bijection of the Riemann sphere. It is an involution: applying it twice gives the identity. The same formula defines inversion in a sphere of .
Example: for the circle with center and radius , the point goes to . Check: lies on the ray from the origin through , and .
Non-example: the map satisfies clause 2 but sends to the opposite ray, so clause 1 fails.
