Isolated hypersurface singularity
Builds on Holomorphic function of several variablesGermCritical point
Definition
Let , let be an open neighbourhood of in and let be a holomorphic function with . The germ has an isolated singularity at if:
- for , so is a critical point of ;
- there is a neighbourhood of in which is the only point where all the partial derivatives vanish.
The germ at of the hypersurface is then called an isolated hypersurface singularity.
Remarks
Example: . Its gradient is , which vanishes only at , so both clauses hold.
Non-example: on . Its gradient is , which vanishes on the whole -axis, so clause 2 fails.
Let be the ideal of the ring of convergent power series generated by the partial derivatives of . By the Rückert Nullstellensatz, clause 2 holds if and only if is finite-dimensional over . Its dimension is the Milnor number of . If has no repeated factor, the points near where is singular are the points of where the gradient of vanishes.
