Iterated function

Builds on FunctionFunction composition

Definition

Let XX be a set and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a map. The iterates of ff are the maps fn ⁣:X→Xf^n \colon X \to X for n∈ℕn \in \N, defined recursively by f0=id⁡X,fn+1=f∘fn,f^0 = \id_X, \qquad f^{n+1} = f \circ f^n, where ∘\circ is function composition. The map fnf^n is the nn-th iterate of ff.

Remarks

By induction, fm∘fn=fm+nf^m \circ f^n = f^{m + n} and (fm)n=fmn(f^m)^n = f^{mn} for all m,n∈ℕm, n \in \N. If ff is a bijection, one also sets f−n=(f−1)nf^{-n} = (f^{-1})^n, and the rule fm∘fn=fm+nf^m \circ f^n = f^{m+n} then holds for all m,n∈ℤm, n \in \Z.

Example: for f(x)=x2f(x) = x^2 on ℝ\R, one has f2(x)=(x2)2=x4f^2(x) = (x^2)^2 = x^4 and in general fn(x)=x2nf^n(x) = x^{2^n}. The check is the induction step fn+1(x)=f(x2n)=x2n+1f^{n+1}(x) = f(x^{2^n}) = x^{2^{n+1}}.

Non-example: for g(x)=x+1g(x) = x + 1 on ℝ\R, the pointwise square x↦g(x)2=(x+1)2x \mapsto g(x)^2 = (x+1)^2 is not the second iterate, which is g2(x)=x+2g^2(x) = x + 2. The notation fnf^n can mean either object, so texts state which one is meant; for example sin⁡2x\sin^2 x usually means (sin⁡x)2(\sin x)^2.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
