Iterative root

Builds on FunctionIterated function

Definition

Let XX be a set, let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a function, and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. An iterative root of order nn of ff is a function g ⁣:X→Xg \colon X \to X such that gn=f,g^n = f, where gn=g∘⋯∘gg^n = g \circ \cdots \circ g is the nn-th iterate of gg.

Remarks

Example: on X=ℝX = \R, the map g(x)=x+1g(x) = x + 1 is an iterative root of order 33 of f(x)=x+3f(x) = x + 3. Check: g2(x)=x+2g^2(x) = x + 2 and g3(x)=x+3=f(x)g^3(x) = x + 3 = f(x).

Non-example: g(x)=3xg(x) = 3x is not an iterative root of order 33 of f(x)=x+3f(x) = x + 3, since g3(x)=27x≠x+3g^3(x) = 27x \ne x + 3.

The roots of order 22 are the functional square roots. Roots are rarely unique: both 2x2x and −2x-2x are iterative roots of order 22 of 4x4x. Some maps have no continuous root of a given order. If g ⁣:ℝ→ℝg \colon \R \to \R were continuous with g2(x)=−xg^2(x) = -x, then gg would be injective, hence strictly monotone. Then g2g^2 would be increasing, but x↦−xx \mapsto -x is decreasing. For odd nn the same map has the root g(x)=−xg(x) = -x, since (−1)n=−1(-1)^n = -1.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
