Definition

Let XX be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus g≥1g \ge 1. Let Ω(X)\Omega(X) be the complex vector space of holomorphic Abelian differentials on XX, which has dimension gg, and let Ω(X)∗\Omega(X)^* be its dual space. Each class γ∈H1(X,ℤ)\gamma \in H_1(X, \Z) gives the linear form ω↦∫γω\omega \mapsto \int_\gamma \omega on Ω(X)\Omega(X), and this defines a map H1(X,ℤ)→Ω(X)∗H_1(X, \Z) \to \Omega(X)^* whose image Λ\Lambda is a lattice of rank 2g2g. The Jacobian variety of XX is the complex torus J(X)=Ω(X)∗/Λ.J(X) = \Omega(X)^* / \Lambda.

Remarks

Choosing a basis ω1,…,ωg\omega_1, \ldots, \omega_g of Ω(X)\Omega(X) identifies J(X)J(X) with ℂg/Λ\C^g / \Lambda, where Λ\Lambda is spanned by the period vectors (∫γω1,…,∫γωg)\left( \int_\gamma \omega_1, \ldots, \int_\gamma \omega_g \right). The Riemann bilinear relations give J(X)J(X) a principal polarization, so it is an abelian variety. By the Abel–Jacobi theorem, J(X)J(X) is isomorphic to the group Pic⁡0(X)\operatorname{Pic}^0(X) of divisor classes of degree 00; this description defines the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve over any field. Example: for X=ℂ/Λ0X = \C / \Lambda_0 with g=1g = 1 and ω1=dz\omega_1 = dz, the periods of dzdz are the elements of Λ0\Lambda_0, so J(X)≅ℂ/Λ0≅XJ(X) \cong \C / \Lambda_0 \cong X. Non-example: a general complex torus ℂ2/Λ\C^2 / \Lambda of dimension 22 admits no nonconstant meromorphic functions, so it is not an abelian variety and is not the Jacobian of any curve. Torelli's theorem says that XX is determined by J(X)J(X) together with its principal polarization.
