James–Stein estimator
Builds on Multivariate normal distributionEstimatorShrinkage estimatorRisk function
Definition
Let and let have the multivariate normal distribution on with unknown mean and covariance matrix , where is known. The James–Stein estimator of is the estimator where is the Euclidean norm.
Remarks
The estimator is defined with probability , since almost surely. It is a shrinkage estimator toward ; shrinking toward a fixed point gives . When the factor is negative; the positive-part estimator replaces the factor by its positive part, and it has even smaller risk.
Under the loss , the estimators have risk . This is below , the risk of , exactly when , and it is smallest for , the James–Stein choice.
Example: , and the observation . Then , the factor is , and .
Non-example: the same formula with in place of . It also shrinks toward , but by the risk formula above its risk equals for every , so it gives no improvement over .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
