Definition

Let π ⁣:E→M\pi \colon E \to M be a smooth fiber bundle over a smooth manifold MM, and let k≥0k \ge 0 be an integer. A local section of π\pi is a smooth map s ⁣:U→Es \colon U \to E, with U⊆MU \subseteq M open, such that π∘s=id⁡U\pi \circ s = \id_U. For p∈Up \in U, let jpksj^k_p s be the kk-jet of ss at pp, viewed as a map from MM to EE. The kk-th jet manifold of π\pi is the set Jkπ={jpks:p∈M, s a local section of π defined near p}.J^k \pi = \set{ j^k_p s : p \in M,\ s \text{ a local section of } \pi \text{ defined near } p }. It comes with the maps πk ⁣:Jkπ→M\pi_k \colon J^k \pi \to M, jpks↦pj^k_p s \mapsto p, and πk,0 ⁣:Jkπ→E\pi_{k,0} \colon J^k\pi \to E, jpks↦s(p)j^k_p s \mapsto s(p).

Let (x1,…,xn,u1,…,um)(x^1, \dots, x^n, u^1, \dots, u^m) be adapted coordinates on an open set of EE, so that xix^i are coordinates on MM and uαu^\alpha are fiber coordinates. They induce coordinates (xi,uα,uIα)(x^i, u^\alpha, u^\alpha_I) on JkπJ^k\pi, where II runs over multi-indices with 1≤∣I∣≤k1 \le \abs{I} \le k and uIα(jpks)=∂∣I∣sα∂xI(p).u^\alpha_I(j^k_p s) = \frac{\partial^{\abs{I}} s^\alpha}{\partial x^I}(p). These charts make JkπJ^k\pi a smooth manifold. With this structure, πk ⁣:Jkπ→M\pi_k \colon J^k\pi \to M is called the kk-th jet bundle of π\pi.

Remarks

The maps πk\pi_k and πk,0\pi_{k,0}, and more generally the maps Jkπ→JlπJ^k\pi \to J^l\pi for l<kl < k that forget the higher derivatives, are smooth fiber bundles. If EE is a vector bundle, then Jkπ→MJ^k\pi \to M is again a vector bundle.

Example: for the trivial bundle π ⁣:ℝ×ℝ→ℝ\pi \colon \R \times \R \to \R, (x,u)↦x(x, u) \mapsto x, the local sections are graphs of functions u=s(x)u = s(x). The first jet manifold has the global coordinates (x,u,ux)(x, u, u_x), so J1π≅ℝ3J^1\pi \cong \R^3, and jp1s=(p,s(p),s′(p))j^1_p s = (p, s(p), s'(p)).

Non-example: the kk-jets of all smooth maps M→EM \to E, not only of sections, form the larger space Jk(M,E)J^k(M, E). A jet of a map ff with π∘f≠id⁡\pi \circ f \ne \id near pp is not in JkπJ^k\pi, because the definition admits only sections.
