Jordan–Kinderlehrer–Otto scheme

Builds on Wasserstein metricProbability measure

Definition

Let 𝒫2(ℝn)\mathcal{P}_2(\R^n) be the set of Borel probability measures on ℝn\R^n with finite second moment, with the Wasserstein distance W2W_2. Let F ⁣:𝒫2(ℝn)→(−∞,+∞]F \colon \mathcal{P}_2(\R^n) \to (-\infty, +\infty] be a functional, let τ>0\tau > 0 be a time step, and let ρ0∈𝒫2(ℝn)\rho_0 \in \mathcal{P}_2(\R^n) with F(ρ0)<∞F(\rho_0) < \infty. The Jordan–Kinderlehrer–Otto scheme for FF with step τ\tau is a sequence (ρkτ)k≥0(\rho_k^\tau)_{k \ge 0} in 𝒫2(ℝn)\mathcal{P}_2(\R^n) with ρ0τ=ρ0\rho_0^\tau = \rho_0. For each k≥0k \ge 0, the measure ρk+1τ\rho_{k+1}^\tau is required to minimize the functional ρ↦F(ρ)+12τW2(ρ,ρkτ)2\rho \mapsto F(\rho) + \frac{1}{2\tau} W_2(\rho, \rho_k^\tau)^2 over 𝒫2(ℝn)\mathcal{P}_2(\R^n). The associated discrete flow is the piecewise constant curve ρτ(t)=ρkτ\rho^\tau(t) = \rho_k^\tau for t∈[kτ,(k+1)τ)t \in [k\tau, (k + 1)\tau).

Remarks

Example: let β>0\beta > 0, let Ψ ⁣:ℝn→[0,∞)\Psi \colon \R^n \to [0, \infty) be smooth with ∣∇Ψ(x)∣≤C(Ψ(x)+1)\abs{\nabla \Psi(x)} \le C(\Psi(x) + 1) for a constant CC, and let F(ρ)=∫Ψρ dx+β−1∫ρlog⁡ρ dxF(\rho) = \int \Psi \rho \, dx + \beta^{-1} \int \rho \log \rho \, dx for ρ\rho with a density, and F(ρ)=+∞F(\rho) = +\infty otherwise. Jordan, Kinderlehrer and Otto proved that minimizers exist at each step, and that ρτ\rho^\tau converges, as τ→0\tau \to 0, to the solution of the Fokker–Planck equation ∂tρ=div⁡(ρ∇Ψ)+β−1Δρ\partial_t \rho = \operatorname{div}(\rho \nabla \Psi) + \beta^{-1} \Delta \rho with initial datum ρ0\rho_0. With Ψ=0\Psi = 0 and β=1\beta = 1 this gives the heat equation ∂tρ=Δρ\partial_t \rho = \Delta \rho.

Non-example: replacing W2W_2 by the L2L^2 distance between densities gives a different scheme, the implicit Euler scheme for the L2L^2 gradient flow. For the entropy ∫ρlog⁡ρ\int \rho \log \rho this flow is ∂tρ=−(log⁡ρ+1)\partial_t \rho = -(\log \rho + 1), which is not the heat equation.

The step is the Wasserstein analogue of the implicit Euler step xk+1∈argmin⁡x(f(x)+12τ∣x−xk∣2)x_{k+1} \in \operatorname{argmin}_x \left( f(x) + \frac{1}{2\tau} \abs{x - x_k}^2 \right) for the gradient flow x˙=−∇f(x)\dot x = -\nabla f(x) in ℝn\R^n.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
