Definition
For and , the horn is the simplicial subset of the standard -simplex generated by all faces with . A simplicial set is a Kan complex if for all and , every map of simplicial sets extends to a map .
Remarks
Equivalently, is a Kan complex when the map is a Kan fibration. A map is the same as a list of simplices for with whenever and . A filler is an with for .
Example: for a topological space , the singular simplicial set is a Kan complex. A map is a continuous map from the geometric horn to , and is a retract of the topological simplex , so the map extends.
Example: the nerve of a groupoid is a Kan complex.
Non-example: , the nerve of the poset , is not a Kan complex. The map sending the vertices to is defined, since the edges and go to and . A filler would be an order-preserving map with values , which does not exist. More generally, the nerve of a category is a Kan complex if and only if the category is a groupoid.
