Associative rings and algebras Constructions Conjecture
Kaplansky's zero divisor conjecture
Statement
Let be a field and let be a torsion-free group. Then the group ring has no zero divisors other than : if and , then or . In other words, is a domain.
Remarks
The conjecture is open. Torsion-freeness is necessary: if has finite order , then with both factors nonzero. It holds when has the unique product property: for nonempty finite sets , some product with , arises in only one way. For such , take and to be the supports of and . The coefficient of that unique product in is a product of two nonzero field elements, so . Left-orderable groups, and in particular torsion-free abelian groups and free groups, have this property. For , the group ring is the Laurent polynomial ring , which is a domain. The conjecture is also known for torsion-free elementary amenable groups, whose group rings are Ore domains. In characteristic zero it follows from the strong Atiyah conjecture for .
