Karoubi envelope
Definition
Let be a category. An endomorphism is idempotent if . The Karoubi envelope is the category with these parts.
- Its objects are pairs with an object of and an idempotent endomorphism of .
- A morphism is a morphism of with .
- Composition is that of , and the identity of is .
Remarks
The condition in clause 2 is equivalent to and . The functor with is fully faithful. Every idempotent of splits. For example, an idempotent of is the composite of the retraction and the section . Other names are idempotent completion and Cauchy completion.
Example: let have one object and morphisms and , with . Then has the objects and . The morphisms are the with , and only qualifies, so has only its identity .
Non-example: with the same , the morphism is not a morphism of . Indeed , so clause 2 fails.
