Kernel of an integral equation
Builds on Integral equationFunction
Definition
Let , let and be given functions, and let . Consider an integral equation of one of the forms or the same forms with the upper limit replaced by . The function is the kernel of the equation. The map is the integral operator with kernel .
Remarks
Example: in the kernel is and .
Non-example: in the unknown does not enter linearly under the integral, so the equation has no kernel in this sense. For a nonlinear equation , the function of three variables is sometimes also called the kernel.
For a Volterra equation, with upper limit , only the values of with matter, and one may set for .
