Kleisli category
Definition
Let be a category and let be a monad on , with unit and multiplication . The Kleisli category is the category given as follows.
- Its objects are the objects of .
- A morphism in is a morphism in .
- The composite of and is .
- The identity on is .
Remarks
The monad laws and give the identity laws and the associativity of . The functor , , has a right adjoint that sends to and to , and this adjunction induces .
Example: let be the monad on , with the inclusion and sending both added points to . A Kleisli morphism is a partial function from to , undefined where the value is , and is composition of partial functions. So is isomorphic to the category of sets and partial functions.
Non-example: composing and by alone gives a morphism , not . Without the multiplication , clause 3 does not produce a morphism of the right type.
For the monad of a variety on , the Kleisli category is equivalent to the category of free algebras of the variety and the homomorphisms between them.
