Definition
Let be a complex analytic family of compact complex manifolds, as in a deformation of complex structure, and let with fibre . For a complex manifold let denote the sheaf of holomorphic sections of its holomorphic tangent bundle. Since is a submersion, there is a short exact sequence of sheaves on The Kodaira–Spencer map of the family at is the connecting homomorphism of its long exact cohomology sequence,
Remarks
The identification uses that is compact and connected, so its global holomorphic functions are constants. In Čech terms: cover near by charts with , glued by . For , the class is represented by the vector fields on the overlaps.
Example: for a trivial family , the sequence splits, and for all .
Example: for the family over the upper half-plane, , so is one-dimensional, and is an isomorphism at every .
A family with surjective at is complete at : every small deformation of is pulled back from it, by a theorem of Kodaira and Spencer.
