Definition

Let MM be a CR manifold with CR structure T0,1M⊆ℂTMT^{0,1}M \subseteq \C TM. Fix a Hermitian metric on T0,1MT^{0,1}M and a smooth volume form on MM. For each integer q≥0q \ge 0, let ℰb0,q(M)\mathcal{E}^{0,q}_b(M) be the space of smooth sections of Λq(T0,1M)∗\Lambda^q (T^{0,1}M)^*, and let ∂ˉb ⁣:ℰb0,q(M)→ℰb0,q+1(M)\bar\partial_b \colon \mathcal{E}^{0,q}_b(M) \to \mathcal{E}^{0,q+1}_b(M) be the tangential Cauchy–Riemann operator. The metric and the volume form give an L2L^2 inner product on compactly supported forms in ℰb0,q(M)\mathcal{E}^{0,q}_b(M). Let ϑb\vartheta_b be the formal adjoint of ∂ˉb\bar\partial_b for these inner products, so that ⟨∂ˉbu,v⟩=⟨u,ϑbv⟩\ip{\bar\partial_b u}{v} = \ip{u}{\vartheta_b v} for compactly supported uu and vv. The Kohn Laplacian on (0,q)(0,q)-forms is □b=∂ˉbϑb+ϑb∂ˉb ⁣:ℰb0,q(M)→ℰb0,q(M).\square_b = \bar\partial_b \vartheta_b + \vartheta_b \bar\partial_b \colon \mathcal{E}^{0,q}_b(M) \to \mathcal{E}^{0,q}_b(M).

Remarks

The adjoint ϑb\vartheta_b is often written ∂ˉb∗\bar\partial_b^*, and □b\square_b is also called the Kohn–Rossi Laplacian or the boundary Laplacian. On functions (q=0q = 0) the first term is absent, and □bu=ϑb∂ˉbu\square_b u = \vartheta_b \bar\partial_b u. Example: on the Heisenberg group ℍ=ℂ×ℝ\mathbb{H} = \C \times \R with coordinates (z,t)(z, t), take T0,1ℍT^{0,1}\mathbb{H} spanned by Zˉ=∂/∂zˉ−iz ∂/∂t\bar Z = \partial/\partial \bar z - i z\, \partial/\partial t, declare Zˉ\bar Z to have length 11, and use Lebesgue measure. The vector field Zˉ\bar Z has divergence 00, so integration by parts shows that the formal adjoint of Zˉ\bar Z is −Z-Z, where Z=∂/∂z+izˉ ∂/∂tZ = \partial/\partial z + i \bar z\, \partial/\partial t is its complex conjugate. Hence □bu=−ZZˉu\square_b u = -Z \bar Z u for functions uu. Non-example: the operator −ZˉZ-\bar Z Z is not the Kohn Laplacian on functions of ℍ\mathbb{H}. It differs from −ZZˉ-Z \bar Z by the commutator [Z,Zˉ]=−2i ∂/∂t[Z, \bar Z] = -2i\, \partial/\partial t, which is not zero. The Kohn Laplacian is not elliptic, because its principal symbol vanishes on the nonzero real covectors that annihilate T1,0M⊕T0,1MT^{1,0}M \oplus T^{0,1}M.
