Kolmogorov epsilon-entropy
Builds on Metric spaceTotally bounded set
Definition
Let be a metric space, let be a nonempty totally bounded set, and let . Let be the least number such that for some subsets of of diameter at most . The Kolmogorov -entropy of is
Remarks
The number is finite because is totally bounded. Covering by closed balls of radius instead gives the covering number , and . So the two versions have the same growth up to a change of by a factor . Kolmogorov and Tikhomirov also used the -capacity, the logarithm of the largest number of points of with pairwise distances greater than .
Example: in . A set of diameter at most lies in an interval of length , so at least of them are needed. On the other hand, consecutive closed intervals of length suffice. So and .
Non-example: is not totally bounded, and no finite family of sets of diameter covers it, so is not defined, or is .
For the class of functions on with and Lipschitz constant at most , in the supremum norm, is of order as .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
