Definition
Let and be complex numbers. Kummer's equation with parameters and is the linear differential equation of second order for a function of a complex variable .
Remarks
The point is a regular singular point with exponents and . The point is an irregular singularity, and there are no other singular points. Example: for , the function is a solution, since . Non-example: for , the same function is not a solution, since the left side equals . For not in , the solution analytic at with value is Kummer's function . A second standard solution is the Tricomi function , singled out by its behaviour as in the right half-plane. The substitution turns the equation into Whittaker's equation, which has no first derivative term.
