Definition
Let be a compact metrizable space. A Kuranishi neighbourhood of a point is a tuple where:
- is a smooth manifold and is a finite group with a smooth action on .
- is a finite-dimensional real vector bundle with a -action that lifts the action on .
- is a -equivariant smooth section of , the Kuranishi map.
- is a homeomorphism onto an open neighbourhood of , where is the quotient space.
A Kuranishi structure on is a choice of a Kuranishi neighbourhood for every , together with coordinate changes, such that:
- For each there is a coordinate change from the chart at to the chart at . It consists of a -invariant open neighbourhood of a lift of and an injective homomorphism . It also has an -equivariant smooth embedding and an -equivariant bundle embedding over . These satisfy , and on .
- The coordinate changes are compatible. Let lie in the image of the chart at , and in the image of the chart at . Then on the common domain agrees with up to the action of an element of , and likewise for and .
- The number is the same for all ; it is the virtual dimension of .
- Let be the normal bundle of in . For each coordinate change, the derivative of induces an isomorphism from onto at the points of .
Remarks
Example: let be a smooth manifold, a vector bundle and a section whose zero set is compact. Take for every the same chart , with identity coordinate changes. All composites of coordinate changes are identities, the virtual dimension is everywhere, and the normal bundles in clause 8 are zero, as are the quotients . So this is a Kuranishi structure on . In particular a compact manifold has the Kuranishi structure with and .
Non-example: let be a single point. One Kuranishi neighbourhood is , , trivial and , whose zero set is one point; another is a point with . Both have virtual dimension , so clause 7 holds. But a coordinate change from to fails clause 8. The normal space of the point in is , the quotient is , and the derivative is not an isomorphism.
Several variants of this definition are in use, due to Fukaya, Oh, Ohta and Ono, to Joyce, and to others. They differ mainly in clauses 6 and 8 and in how the coordinate changes are organised.
Clause 8 is sometimes called the tangent bundle condition, and it is what makes orientations and virtual fundamental classes well defined.
