Definition
A strictly increasing sequence of positive integers is lacunary (in the sense of Hadamard) if there is a number with A lacunary trigonometric series is a trigonometric series of the form with real or complex coefficients and a lacunary sequence . A lacunary power series is a power series with a lacunary sequence .
Remarks
Example: is lacunary with , since .
Non-example: has frequencies with . So no is a lower bound for all ratios, and the series is not lacunary in the sense of Hadamard.
A theorem of Sidon says that if a lacunary trigonometric series is the Fourier series of a bounded function, then . For power series the Hadamard gap theorem applies. Weaker gap conditions, such as in the Fabry gap theorem, are also studied.
