Laguerre polynomials

Builds on Gamma function

Definition

Let α>−1\alpha > -1 be a real number and let n≥0n \ge 0 be an integer. The generalized Laguerre polynomial of degree nn and parameter α\alpha is Ln(α)(x)=∑k=0n(−1)kΓ(n+α+1)(n−k)! Γ(k+α+1)xkk!,L_n^{(\alpha)}(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} (-1)^k \frac{\Gamma(n + \alpha + 1)}{(n - k)! \, \Gamma(k + \alpha + 1)} \frac{x^k}{k!}, where Γ\Gamma is the gamma function. The Laguerre polynomial of degree nn is Ln=Ln(0)L_n = L_n^{(0)}.

Remarks

For α=0\alpha = 0 the coefficient is a binomial coefficient: Ln(x)=∑k=0n(nk)(−x)kk!L_n(x) = \sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{n}{k} \frac{(-x)^k}{k!}. Example: L1(α)(x)=1+α−xL_1^{(\alpha)}(x) = 1 + \alpha - x and L2(x)=1−2x+x22L_2(x) = 1 - 2x + \frac{x^2}{2}. Rodrigues' formula: Ln(α)(x)=x−αexn!dndxn(e−xxn+α)L_n^{(\alpha)}(x) = \frac{x^{-\alpha} e^x}{n!} \frac{d^n}{dx^n} \left( e^{-x} x^{n + \alpha} \right). Orthogonality: ∫0∞Lm(α)(x)Ln(α)(x) xαe−x dx=Γ(n+α+1)n!δmn\int_0^\infty L_m^{(\alpha)}(x) L_n^{(\alpha)}(x) \, x^\alpha e^{-x} \, dx = \frac{\Gamma(n + \alpha + 1)}{n!} \delta_{mn}. The polynomial Ln(α)L_n^{(\alpha)} solves the Laguerre equation xy′′+(α+1−x)y′+ny=0x y'' + (\alpha + 1 - x) y' + n y = 0. Check for n=1n = 1: y=1+α−xy = 1 + \alpha - x gives 0−(α+1−x)+(1+α−x)=00 - (\alpha + 1 - x) + (1 + \alpha - x) = 0. Non-example: the clause α>−1\alpha > -1 is needed for orthogonality, because for α≤−1\alpha \le -1 the weight xαe−xx^\alpha e^{-x} is not integrable near 00.
