Laguerre series expansion of the Laplace transform
Definition
Let be the Laguerre polynomial of degree , and let for . The functions form an orthonormal basis of the space . Let , with coefficients , and let be its Laplace transform. The Laguerre series expansion of is
Remarks
The expansion holds because the Laplace transform of is , and because is the inner product of with , which lies in when . With , which maps the half-plane onto the unit disk, it reads . The coefficients satisfy .
Example: , that is . Then and all other . The check: .
Non-example: has the Laplace transform , but , so the coefficients are not defined by the formula above.
Applying the same expansion to for parameters and gives the scaled variants used in practice.
