Lambert W function
Builds on Exponential functionInverse function
Definition
Let be , where is the exponential function.
- The principal branch is the inverse of the restriction of to .
- The lower branch is the inverse of the restriction of to .
Thus for both branches on their domains.
Remarks
The two restrictions are bijections because is positive for and negative for , , as , and as .
Example: , because and . Also , , and , the omega constant.
Non-example: is in the domain of neither branch, because for every real .
Over , the equation has infinitely many solutions for , and they are grouped into branches , , which extend and . Implicit differentiation gives for .
