Lamé function
Builds on Elliptic functionLinear differential equation of order n
Definition
Let , and let , and be the Jacobi elliptic functions of modulus . Let and be complex numbers. Lamé's equation is the linear differential equation A Lamé function is a solution of Lamé's equation. Let be a nonnegative integer. A Lamé polynomial of degree is a nonzero solution of the form . Here and is a polynomial.
Remarks
Example: for and , the function is a Lamé polynomial. Check: from , and , one gets , so . In the same way is a solution for and for . Non-example: for and , the function is not a solution, since the left side equals , which is not identically . For each nonnegative integer there are exactly values of that admit a Lamé polynomial of degree . This matches the dimension of the space of spherical harmonics of degree . An equivalent form of the equation uses the Weierstrass function in place of , and in the variable it becomes a special case of Heun's equation.
