Laplace transform method for the heat equation
Builds on Laplace transformHeat equationComplementary error functionInverse Laplace transform
Example
Consider the heat equation on the half-line, for an unknown function with and : This models a cold rod, initially at temperature , whose end is held at temperature from time on. Let be the Laplace transform in the time variable, for real . Since , the transform of is , so the equation becomes the ordinary differential equation in . Its solutions are . Boundedness in forces , and the boundary condition gives , so . Hence . The table pair , for fixed , gives the inverse transform: where is the complementary error function. Check: as with fixed, ; at , ; and for , so is bounded.
