Definition
Let be a parameter set. Let be a pair of random vectors, where is observed and is not. A latent variable model is a family of joint distributions of . The variables are the latent variables. The statistical model for the data is the family of marginal distributions of under . When has a density with respect to a product measure , the observed density is
Remarks
Often the components of are assumed conditionally independent given , the assumption of local independence. Example: let be standard normal and, given , let be independent with distribution . Then is bivariate normal with variances and covariance ; the dependence of and comes only from . Non-example: a regression model of given a measured covariate is not a latent variable model, since all of its variables are observed. The models are classified by the type of the variables. Factor analysis has continuous latent and observed variables. Latent class and mixture models have discrete latent variables. Item response models have continuous latent and discrete observed variables.
