Lattice of partitions

Builds on Partition of a setRefinement of a partitionBell numbersDiamond lattice M3

Example

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let Πn\Pi_n be the set of all partitions of {1,…,n}\set{1, \ldots, n}. Order Πn\Pi_n by refinement: σ≤τ\sigma \le \tau when each block of σ\sigma lies inside some block of τ\tau. This is a partial order, and Πn\Pi_n is a lattice. The meet σ∧τ\sigma \wedge \tau has as blocks the nonempty intersections B∩CB \cap C of a block BB of σ\sigma and a block CC of τ\tau. The join σ∨τ\sigma \vee \tau is the finest partition coarser than both. In it, two points share a block when a chain of blocks of σ\sigma and τ\tau, each meeting the next, connects them. The least element is the partition into singletons, and the greatest element is the partition with one block. The number of elements of Πn\Pi_n is the Bell number BnB_n.

Check for n=3n = 3. The five partitions are 1∣2∣31|2|3, 12∣312|3, 13∣213|2, 23∣123|1 and 123123. The three partitions with one pair lie strictly between the bottom and the top, and no two of them are comparable. The meet of any two of them is 1∣2∣31|2|3 and their join is 123123, so Π3\Pi_3 is the diamond lattice M3M_3.

Remarks

The lattice Πn\Pi_n is graded: the rank of a partition with kk blocks is n−kn - k. It is a geometric lattice, but for n≥3n \ge 3 it is not distributive, since it contains M3M_3. The Möbius function of Πn\Pi_n from the bottom to the top equals (−1)n−1(n−1)!(-1)^{n-1} (n-1)!.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
